Lakemba St Basil’s Homes aged care evacuated after fire at neighbouring bowling club

A BUILDING being used by an Islamic youth group has been destroyed by fire in Sydney’s southwest this morning.

Ten fire crews of 40 firefighters from eight surrounding stations attended the blaze on Croydon St.

The UMA Islamic Centre, which runs many youth programs, was already well alight when fire fighters arrived at the scene about 8.50am.

The UMA has been renting the former bowling club since 2002.

The blaze destroyed the centre on Croydon St, Lakemba, causing part of its roof to collapse.

No one was inside the building at the time, however, 50 residents from an adjacent nursing home had to be moved to another area of their residence until the blaze was contained about 10.10am.
