Hume among most affordable for rentals, but it’s still a struggle for many

SINGLE parents and age pensioners are among those struggling to find affordable rentals in Hume.

According to the 2016 Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot, Hume was among the most affordable areas for rentals in Melbourne, yet options were scarce for those on income support or minimum wages.

The report, released by Anglicare Australia, shows of the 335 listings across Hume on April 2-3, just four properties were classed affordable and appropriate for couple age pensioners, while just three were suitable for single working parents on the minimum wage.

There were 51 options for couple families on one income; 68 for single minimum wage earners in share housing; and 173 for couple families both on the minimum wage.

Anglicare Victoria chief executive Paul McDonald said people on low incomes or on Commonwealth support were “resorting to risky situations just to put a roof over their heads”.

He said vulnerable young people leaving the care system and relying on youth or special benefit allowances faced spending more than 70 per cent of their weekly income on rent, and called for state funded out-of-home care for those under the age of 21.
