Life changing grants program keeps young people out of aged care
Thanks to the generous support of GIO, $250,000 is currently available for people aged 18 - 65 in NSW/ACT who require specialised equipment, support, or home modifications to reduce the risk of moving into aged care, as part of Youngcare’s At Home Care Grants program.
The micro grants program is available for the second time in the ACT, addressing a serious need in Australia for improving choices for young people with high care needs, and helping them to avoid calling aged care facilities ‘home’.
Youngcare CEO, Samantha Kennerley, said there wasn’t a one-size-fits-all option for young people with high care needs.
“Sometimes all it takes is a wheelchair, walking frame, hoist, or modifications to make a home disability accessible. Respite is also vital for young people with high care needs and their carers. It provides them with the opportunity to take time out, alleviate stress and manage health conditions ensuring they can continue with their role as a carer,” Mrs Kennerley said.
“Since we introduced the grants in Queensland in 2009, every single grant round has been oversubscribed, highlighting the enormous need that still exists.
“For the second year running, we can continue helping young people in the ACT to remain in their homes with their families.”
GIO Executive Portfolio Manager, Paul Lawton, said GIO was proud to support the program.
“In our line of business, we know that people's lives can be changed in an instant through an accident or a debilitating illness,” Mr Lawton said.
“Receiving an At Home Care Grant can also change a young person’s life, but for the better. That’s why we are proud to continue our support of Youngcare and this vital program.”
21-year-old Queanbeyan woman Breanna Dallinger is one of hundreds of young Australians who have already received a Youngcare At Home Care Grant.
Breanna’s older sister Mikarlie said that the grants have allowed Breanna to continue to live at home with her family, and enjoy life – despite her severe disability.
“Receiving this grant has meant so much to our family. The grant means Breanna can continue to live at home, and participate in all her favourite activities such as swimming, music and riding her bike at the park,” said Ms Dallinger.
Applications for the one-off grants up to $10,000 close on 15 June 2016.
